The Power of Archery

Oct 24 | What Different Can Do

Archery is a powerful metaphor for personal growth and the struggles that come with it. Much like life, archery demands focus, patience, and persistence. As you draw back the bowstring, it symbolizes the tension we experience during challenges. The arrow’s flight represents our efforts to achieve goals, and the target symbolizes personal success, often requiring multiple attempts before hitting the mark. Archery teaches that the journey toward improvement is often marked by trial and error, with each miss offering a lesson in patience, adjustment, and self-reflection. At Camp Southern Ground, we see how this timeless activity benefits both children and veterans in profound ways.

A Tool for Letting Go—Literally and Figuratively

Warrior PATHH (Progressive and Alternative Training for Helping Heroes) at Camp Southern Ground uses archery to foster Posttraumatic Growth. Many participants come to PATHH after experiencing significant trauma, and archery helps them rediscover a sense of control and purpose. The process of aiming for a target teaches mindfulness, helping individuals to focus on the present moment and reduce anxiety. Additionally, archery requires that participants become aware of their body, mind, and emotions, offering a therapeutic way to reconnect with themselves after periods of stress or trauma.

Building Confidence in Children

At Summer Camp at Camp Southern Ground, archery is similarly used to teach youth about perseverance, goal setting, and handling setbacks. It’s more than just an activity—it’s a way for young campers to build self-efficacy and understand the importance of staying focused despite distractions or momentary failures. Each shot taken, whether a hit or miss, encourages growth. Our Inclusion Model benefits from including archery because, for many of our campers, this is the first time they’ve held a bow or shot at a target. This novelty helps put everyone on equal footing and allows for shared exploration in a new activity, as well as providing an opportunity to be a good friend by enthusiastically encouraging your friends!

As our founder Zac Brown explains, “Archery teaches you to stay calm and focused, even when things don’t go your way. That’s a lesson we all need in life.” This statement reflects the broader philosophy behind these programs—using archery as a metaphor for overcoming life’s difficulties and striving toward personal growth. Zac went on to say, “You don’t have to be perfect to make a difference—you just have to be present.” This quote perfectly encapsulates the lesson archery teaches, which is – it’s not about hitting the bullseye every time but about showing up, staying focused, and learning from each attempt.

A New Archery Pavilion at Camp Southern Ground

We’re excited to announce that Camp Southern Ground is getting a brand-new archery pavilion, thanks to the generosity of some amazing community partners! The new pavilion will be a hub for skill-building, confidence-boosting, and therapeutic experiences, making it easier for more to benefit from the power of archery. Whether it’s a camper hitting their first bullseye or a veteran finding peace through focused practice, we know this pavilion will make a lasting impact.

We’re incredibly grateful to our community partners for making this vision a reality, and we can’t wait to share it with all of you!
