Kids Earth Day Activity: Mini Ecosystem

Apr 19 | Kids Activities, What Different Can Do

Growing a Love for Our Planet at Camp Southern Ground

Each year, Earth Day gives us a chance to pause and reflect on the incredible planet we call home, and the role we all play in protecting it. At Camp Southern Ground, caring for the environment isn’t just something we talk about once a year. It’s woven into everything we do, from outdoor adventures to hands-on learning experiences that connect campers to nature in meaningful ways.

Spending time outside has a powerful impact on young minds. When kids hike a trail, plant a seed, or simply sit quietly and listen to the sounds of nature, they begin to understand that the Earth isn’t just a place we live, it’s something we’re part of. Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to deepen that connection and inspire lifelong stewardship.

Why Earth Day Matters for Kids

Children are naturally curious about the world around them. Earth Day taps into that curiosity and helps them understand how small actions like recycling, conserving water, or caring for plants can make a big difference. When kids feel connected to nature, they’re more likely to protect it.

At camp, these lessons come to life through experience. Whether it’s exploring the woods, learning about wildlife, or working together on sustainability projects, campers gain a sense of responsibility and pride in caring for the environment.

Earth Day Activity: Build Your Own Mini Ecosystem

Here’s a simple, fun activity you can do at camp or at home to celebrate Earth Day while teaching kids about ecosystems and sustainability.

What You’ll Need:

  • A clear jar or plastic container
  • Small rocks or pebbles
  • Potting soil
  • Small plants or moss
  • A few natural items (twigs, leaves, or bark)
  • Water

Instructions:

  1. Start by adding a layer of small rocks to the bottom of the container for drainage.
  2. Add a layer of soil on top of the rocks.
  3. Gently plant your small plants or moss in the soil.
  4. Decorate with twigs, leaves, or other natural elements.
  5. Lightly water the ecosystem and place it in a spot with indirect sunlight.

What Kids Will Learn:
As they watch their mini ecosystem grow, kids will see how plants, soil, water, and sunlight work together to create a balanced environment. It’s a hands-on way to understand the basics of ecosystems, responsibility, and care.

Encourage kids to observe changes each day. Are the plants growing? Is the soil still moist? What happens if it gets too much sun or not enough water? These small observations build awareness and critical thinking.

Carrying Earth Day Forward

Earth Day is just one day, but the habits we build can last a lifetime. At Camp Southern Ground, we believe that when kids feel connected to nature, they’re inspired to protect it not because they have to, but because they want to.

This Earth Day, let’s continue to nurture that connection. Whether it’s through a simple activity, a walk outside, or a conversation about sustainability, every moment spent appreciating the Earth helps shape a brighter, greener future.
