Cooking with Kids: April Flowers

Apr 20 | Kids Activities, What Different Can Do

Spring is springing and we are inspired by the flowers that are blooming all around us! We also love culinary crafts here at Camp Southern Ground so we’re taking that inspiration all the way to the kitchen.

Just like the kids we serve, no two creations look the same – and that’s what makes them special. This “recipe” is a simple, hands-on reminder of What Different Can Do when we let creativity bloom. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A round base! This could be an apple slice, a rice cake, a pancake, you could even go crazy and use a cookie!
  • A spread of some kind. In my version, I used hazelnut spread but you could use peanut butter or yogurt for a nut-free version
  • Fruit and toppings! I used strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and some chocolate chips

For this project, if you have younger kids, it might be worth investing in some kid safe knives so that kids can start learning knife skills.

  1. Start by washing and slicing your fruit. Then grab your round base, I used a rice cake!
  2. Cover the base in your spread, being sure to cover to the edges so everything sticks.
  3. Now it’s time to get creative! Arrange the berries around the edge in a “petal pattern” this could look a lot of different ways so flex those creative muscles! I used chocolate chips to look like seeds!
