Gold Star Families Find Connection at TAPS Warrior Family Camp Weekend

Mar 4, 2025
This past weekend, Camp Southern Ground and Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) partnered to host an unforgettable Warrior Family Camp, welcoming 16 Gold Star families, including 24 children, for a weekend of connection, healing, and fun. Families traveled from as far as California and Ohio to participate in this unique experience, designed to offer both adventure and reflection in a supportive and caring environment.

Throughout the weekend, TAPS leaders worked side by side with Camp Southern Ground staff to provide meaningful experiences that honored both the grief and resilience of each family. Through shared experiences and intentional moments of connection, participants found space to heal while also creating lasting memories together.

A Weekend of Fun, Connection, and Healing

Warrior Family Camp is built around safety, connection, joy, and presence—providing a space where families can be supported while navigating their grief. The weekend was filled with outdoor activities – including biking, archery, art & crafts, and fishing – and guided programming designed to foster communication, strengthen family bonds, and support personal growth.

One Gold Star spouse shared, “This is the first time we have laughed and let go since my husband died.” These words reflect the powerful experience of Warrior Family Camp—where grief is honored, and some joy is rediscovered in the company of those who understand.

A Partnership Rooted in Support and Strength

The collaboration between TAPS and Camp Southern Ground ensures that Gold Star families have a space to come together, share stories, and find strength in community. Both organizations remain deeply committed to supporting military families, providing resources and programs that encourage growth and resilience beyond the weekend experience.

As families departed, they left not only with cherished memories but also with a renewed sense of connection and the knowledge that they are not alone. At Camp Southern Ground and TAPS, the mission continues—to honor, support, and uplift those who have sacrificed so much.
