Warriors of Camp Southern Ground
Sergio Barocio
Sergio is a U.S. Marine and Warrior Week and Warrior PATHH alum. This is his story.
I grew up in Houston, Texas and joined the Marine Corps at 18 years old, right out of high school. I served as an 0311 (Infantry Rifleman) from 2002-2008.
Are there any interesting facts about your time served you’d like to share?
I had the opportunity to shake the hands of both former Presidents George Bush Sr. and George Bush Jr. at the Superbowl in Houston while doing security detail.
How did your transition out of the military go?
It was hard losing my sense of identity and purpose. I attended Warrior Week in 2023 and then Warrior PATHH in February of 2026. It made me finally put down my mask, be open and vulnerable so that I could finally let go of some things as well as start to put the pieces of the puzzle back together. The best thing for me was the fact that I was able to figure out the root cause of my issues. It has allowed me to move forward and have a better since of where I’m going.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned is that “it’s not what’s wrong, it’s what happened.” Being vulnerable and raw with myself and others has allowed me to grow more than I ever thought I’d be able to.
