Unplug and Reconnect

Mar 7 | What Different Can Do

Tech-Free Fun for Kids

In today’s digital world, screens are everywhere—phones, tablets, computers, and TVs demand our attention at every turn. While technology has its place, taking a break from screens is essential for kids’ mental, emotional, and physical well-being. That’s why the National Day of Unplugging is a great reminder to step away from technology and reconnect with the world around us. At Camp Southern Ground, we believe in the power of outdoor play, creativity, and face-to-face connections. Here are some tech-free activities to inspire fun and adventure for your kids!

Outdoor Adventures

  • Go on a Nature Scavenger Hunt – Make a list of natural items like pinecones, feathers, or different types of leaves, and send kids on a mission to find them. This encourages exploration and appreciation for the great outdoors. Need some inspiration? Here’s a downloadable scavenger hunt.
  • Build a Fort – Whether it’s using branches and logs outside or pillows and blankets indoors, fort-building sparks creativity and teamwork.
  • Try Backyard Camping – Set up a tent, roast marshmallows, and tell stories under the stars for a fun and simple outdoor adventure.
  • Climb a Tree – A timeless activity that builds confidence, strength, and problem-solving skills.
  • Create an Obstacle Course – Use household items like ropes, cones, or hula hoops to create a fun and active challenge in the backyard.

Creative and Mindful Play

  • Paint or Draw in Nature – Let kids use nature as inspiration for art by painting rocks, sketching trees, or creating leaf rubbings.
  • Make a Bird Feeder – Use recycled materials like milk cartons or pinecones with peanut butter and seeds to attract birds and observe wildlife. Check out these four easy & eco-friendly ideas from Run Wild with My Child!
  • Start a Gratitude Journal – Have kids write or draw about things they are grateful for each day. This promotes mindfulness and reflection.
  • Put on a Play or Talent Show – Encourage storytelling and performance by letting kids create their own play, songs, or skits.
  • Write a Letter to a Loved One – A handwritten note or drawing sent to a friend or family member is a wonderful way to stay connected without technology.

Group and Family Fun

  • Cook a Meal Together – Involve kids in making a fun recipe like homemade pizza, trail mix, or fruit kabobs.
  • Play Classic Board Games – Dust off board games and card games for a fun family game night.
  • Tell Campfire Stories – Even without a campfire, gather around and take turns telling imaginative or funny stories.
  • Volunteer Together – Spend time giving back by picking up litter, helping a neighbor, or visiting a local shelter.
  • Have a Dance Party – Turn on some music and dance like nobody’s watching!

At Camp Southern Ground, we see firsthand how stepping away from screens allows kids to build friendships, learn new skills, and gain confidence. By celebrating National Day of Unplugging, we can all take a moment to slow down, appreciate the present, and encourage our children to embrace real-world adventures. So, power down, step outside, and let the fun begin!
